Being part of a community filled with creatives provides a sense of connection and creativity. Everyone comes to their craft from a different perspective and background. They use different methods and materials to make unique creations and share their stories.
Ayke & WhatNot's participation in the inaugural Meet the Maker event in 2020, not only provided me with an opportunity to establish the business in the Waitaki region but also introduced me to a community of creative artists and makers. It also allowed me to tell my story. That experience left a great impression on me, and Ayke & WhatNot is happy to take part once again in this year's Meet the Maker Creative Waitaki Studio Tour over Labour Weekend (23-24 October 2021).
Meeting people who stopped by the Ayke & WhatNot Studio was a great opportunity to engage with them and learn about what they found interesting when it came to our wood furniture and décor pieces. I believe that a big part of any space is its ability to tell your story, ground you and allow you to reconnect with what is important. Listening to how people would potentially use the pieces in their space was a great reminder of how each piece could transform a space through its functionality and its aesthetic appeal.
I certainly also enjoy being on the other side of the conversation whenever I get the chance, meeting with artists and makers and learning about their craft and influences when travelling around New Zealand.
I do hope you take the time to go out this Labour Weekend and support local artists and makers in the Waitaki region. For more information about the Meet the Maker Creative Waitaki Studio Tour, head to: https://oamaruoperahouse.co.nz/waitaki-arts-festival-meet-the-maker/
