Work Process
My father, Stefan Benadé, is a woodworker who makes most of the pieces for the collection while I am learning the craft from him. We carefully craft our unique wood furniture and décor pieces with woodworking equipment and hand tools in our workshop in North Otago. We enjoy learning and developing our craft and improving our work processes to ensure quality products and service. We work mainly with wood - a natural material that brings a unique aspect to each piece. Your piece will differ from what you see on the Ayke & WhatNot website, social media profiles, email marketing and other marketing collateral.
Disclaimer: To best showcase the quality, craftsmanship and functionality of our products, we aim to represent our products as honestly as we can through images on our website, social media channels, email marketing and other marketing materials. Factors such as lighting or computer monitor settings might influence how product images are displayed and might not 100% reflect the end product.
Wood
We create our products with a range of sustainably sourced New Zealand Native wood and New Zealand Exotic wood. We don't stock wood and only order what we need from New Zealand suppliers once you have placed your order. This process ensures that the wood we use is in the best condition and that we minimise waste by not buying more than what we need. Most of our reclaimed wood is from old furniture, gifted from clients or sourced while repairing historic buildings. Contact me if you want more information about the wood we use.
Made to Order Wood Furniture and Décor
We work on a made-to-order system, and we can provide you with an estimated completion date once you have placed your order. The completion dates are dependent on material availability from our suppliers and our production schedule when you place your order.
Macrocarpa Outdoor Furniture Care Instructions
We use a mix of Linseed oil and Tung oil on our Macrocarpa wood outdoor furniture, which gives them a warm brown colour. Oil your outdoor furniture seasonally with outdoor furniture oil if you want to maintain this look. If you do not oil them, they will weather into a soft, silver-grey colour over time.
Caring for Riempie Furniture
To maintain the clean, white look of the riempies (rawhide strips), brush it down to remove most of the dirt and dust. Use a leather cleaner and clean cloth. Never use water to clean the riempies (rawhide strips), as it will weaken the riempies.
Canvas Outdoor Material
Outdoor canvas material is part of the construction of some of our furniture pieces. We recommend that you store these furniture pieces inside when not in use. This will help with the longevity of your furniture piece by protecting it from harsh weather conditions.
We source all our outdoor canvas locally from The Canvas Company. To learn more about how to look after canvas material, head to The Canvas Company's blog.
Care instructions for wood food serving and preparation pieces
Our wood food serving and preparation pieces are finished with natural oil that consists of a blend of tree resin and plant oils, carnauba and beeswax.
To clean, use hot soapy water with mild soap to hand wash your piece and dry it immediately. Do not soak in water and let it fully dry in an upright position. Do not put in a dishwasher or soak in water. Depending on the frequency of washing and use, oil your board weekly or monthly.
You can use natural ingredients like beeswax or mineral oil to oil your board once it has dried. Apply with a small cloth and leave for about 30 minutes (or depending on the instructions). Buff or remove any excess oil with a clean cloth.
Wholesale Selling to Retailers
We are always interested in discussing possible wholesale opportunities with retailers who share our values of quality and sustainably made wood furniture with their clients.
